The Mojave Desert Tortoise application is a tool for people to use when they out in the desert and happen to come across this threatened species. This solution allows the user to become better educated about the species and then share their finding with government on a voluntary basis. The application once first loaded will ask the user to complete an anonymous five question survey which those results will be shared with the Fish and Wildlife agency of the United States. Once that survey is completed the user will not see that again and will be taken to the home screen. From the home screen the user can chose to take a photo, click on additional information on the species or learn about the groups that help to develop this application. Our intent with this application is to give the user an opportunity to submit their findings of this rare species and learn interesting facts as well.

Check out this fun game about the new GOES-R weather satellite.

“Satellite Insight” was created for the GOES-R mission (Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite, R series), under development at Goddard Space Flight Center as a joint NASA and NOAA effort. Educational as well as entertaining, the game challenges players to keep up with the stream of data from GOES-R’s six main instruments.

Colored blocks falling into columns on a grid represent small pieces of data. To save lives and protect expensive instruments, the GOES-R weather satellite must not lose any data. Users bundle like data types together by tapping to select three or more contiguous same-colored blocks, then tap on the GOES-R satellite to store the data before the grid overflows. Data blocks fall slowly at first, but arrive faster as the game continues. Each speed-up also brings a power-up tool players can use at any time to help clear the grid. They keep the game going as long as they can and try to beat their best time.

The game builds awareness of this important technical resource that most people never hear about. The game instructions also include basic information about GOES-R and geostationary orbits, as well as links to The Space Place, the NASA Science Mission Directorate’s website for elementary school kids; and SciJinks, the website about weather and Earth science for middle-school kids jointly sponsored by NASA and NOAA.

Submit invasive species directly from the field.

IveGot1 brings the power of EDDMapS to your iPhone. Now you can submit invasive species observations directly with your iPhone from the field. These reports are uploaded to EDDMapS and e-mailed directly to local and state verifiers for review. IveGot1 was developed by the University of Georgia Center for Invasive Species and Ecosystem Health through a cooperative agreement with the National Park Service, in cooperation with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission and the University of Florida Center for Aquatic and Invasive Plants. IveGot1 is more than just an iPhone app, it is an integrated invasive species reporting and outreach campaign for Florida that includes the app, a website with direct access to invasive species reporting and a hotline 1-888-IVEGOT1 for instant reports of live animals.

Every year more than 85 million people visit Florida. However, people are not Florida’s only visitors; Florida is also an inviting destination for invasive species that threaten to undermine the health of our environment. More than an inconvenience, invasive plants and animals can greatly alter our native landscape, adversely impact native wildlife, destroy agricultural crops and threaten our health. Invasions of exotic species cost Floridians over $500 million each year. The economic costs are small compared to the ecological ones. Florida has millions of acres of public lands; these lands furnish us the water we drink, the air we breathe and countless recreational opportunities. These public lands are highly vulnerable to invasion by exotic plant and animal species; it is estimated that more than 1.7 million acres of Florida’s natural areas have been infested by invasive species.

By reporting sightings of invasive animals and plants, we can better assess the extent of the infestations and hopefully eradicate new infestations before they become huge problems such as melaleuca or Burmese pythons. The goal of IveGot1 is to make identification and reporting easy and efficient as possible.
Features:

Easy species reporting that captures your current location and allows you to submit an image of your sightings. IveGot1 allows for both online and offline reporting with reports saved on your phone for uploading when you have network connectivity.

Images and information on Florida’s worst non-native invasive animals and plants.

Real-time point distribution maps centered on your current location.

Get Involved – Join the Florida Exotic Pest Plant Council or your local Cooperative Invasive Species Management Area (CISMA) through the Florida Invasive Species Partnership.

Powered by EDDMapS – The University of Georgia Center for Invasive Species and Ecosystem Health’s Early Detection and Distribution Mapping System. EDDMapS allows for real time tracking of invasive species occurrences using local and national distribution maps and electronic early detection reporting tools.

View the official 9/11 Memorial app.

The National September 11 Memorial & Museum created the official 9/11 Memorial application as a guide to understanding 9/11 through the eyes of those who witnessed the events. Given the sensitivity surrounding the events of 9/11, viewer discretion is advised.

The app has three features:

Tour
Take a seven-stop walking tour of the area around the World Trade Center, accompanied by audio and photo narration. The events of the day and its aftermath are told by first responders, rescue workers, volunteers, and those who lived and worked in Lower Manhattan on 9/11. While the walking tour takes place in Lower Manhattan, the tour content is accessible to users anywhere.

Explore
View images related to the events of 9/11 and their aftermath taken nearby wherever you are. Photos may be viewed in Augmented Reality-technology mode, which overlays images on the camera view. All photos were contributed to the museum by survivors and witnesses through 911history.org.

Timeline
Explore this interactive timeline of the day’s events and aftermath. It includes links to witness photos taken during these time blocks.

The app can operate in an offline mode for non-U.S. visitors who have disabled data roaming. In this mode, all tour content is still accessible. The app includes a map of free WiFi hotspots near the tour route for downloading “Explore” photos from the vicinity.

The app is rated 9+ due to infrequent/mild realistic violence or infrequent/mild mature/suggestive themes.

For more information on the 9/11 Memorial, please visit http://www.911memorial.org/

Get the heat index for your work site and precautions to prevent heat illness.

When you’re working in the heat, safety comes first. With the OSHA Heat Safety Tool, you have vital safety information available whenever and wherever you need it — right on your mobile phone.

The App allows workers and supervisors to calculate the heat index for their worksite, and, based on the heat index, displays a risk level to outdoor workers. Then, with a simple tap, you can get reminders about the protective measures that should be taken at that risk level to protect workers from heat-related illness—reminders about drinking enough fluids, scheduling rest breaks, planning for and knowing what to do in an emergency, adjusting work operations, gradually building up the workload for new workers, training on heat illness signs and symptoms, and monitoring each other for signs and symptoms of heat-related illness.
Stay informed and safe in the heat, check your risk level.

For more information about safety while working in the heat, see OSHA’s heat illness webpage, including new online guidance about using the heat index to protect workers.

Find your representatives by your location

See how they vote, read up on bills

Stay on top of floor activity, committee hearings

Be notified of new events

Answers to common questions:

Legislators don’t have public email addresses.

The app uses location only to find your local representative.

It does not do anything on boot unless you enable notifications.

The app cannot be moved to the SD card, because it uses background services for notifications.

COMMITTEE NOTE: House committee information is now available. Still missing some membership data, the House has not made everything public yet.

CUPCAKE USERS: This may be the last version of the app available for Android 1.5. Our apologies to anyone affected, but we need to start working to optimize the app for tablets soon, and doing this well means dropping support for Android 1.5.

With the Release Mako Android app you can now report your live releases of shortfin mako sharks from Android mobile devices while still on the water.

The app uses a device’s built-in GPS, when available, to fill in exact location coordinates on the shortfin mako live release data form. The catch and release reports submitted via email allow fishermen to put their mako on the Shortfin Mako Shark Live Release Interactive Web Map at http://www.nmfs.noaa.gov/sfa/hms/shortfinmako/Map/index.htm.

The submission form is easy to fill out and operates like the online submission form. Touching the latitude and longitude boxes provides an location when GPS is available. The app also includes information about shortfin mako stock status, fishing regulations, FAQs, and safe handling and release guidelines.

By submitting this live release information through the app, and putting their mako on the map, fishermen will be able to see how they are making a difference in the conservation of shortfin mako sharks and encourage others to do the same.

Overfishing is occurring on the North Atlanitc shortfin mako shark population. By releasing shortfin mako sharks that are unintentionally caught or caught for sport, U.S. fishermen will be leaders in encouraging fishermen from other nations to conserve this shark species. Get the Release Mako app and become a leader.

Be Prepared
When disaster strikes, know when and where shelters have been opened to provide assistance.

Map View
Offered by the American Red Cross, the application maps locations and shelter details across the United States. Zoom in to the local area. View shelter details: the agency managing the shelter, capacity of the shelter and current population, the associated disaster event and the specific shelter address and location.

List View and Disaster News
View open shelters by state, jump to the latest disaster information via the Disaster Online Newsroom, and donate to help the American Red Cross respond to those in need.

National Shelter System
The application uses data about open shelters from the American Red Cross National Shelter System (NSS). The NSS contains information about 60,000 potential disaster facilities and is used to track and report on shelter information during disasters. The NSS enables emergency managers and disaster relief workers to identify relevant information for all shelters in use and to develop effective response strategies before disasters strike.

NSS information is available to assist FEMA, state and local emergency management officials, non-profit, charitable, and faith-based organizations manage and deploy effective mass care services.

Regularly Updated
Shelter information is updated from the NSS every 30 minutes. Current populations are typically updated every noon and midnight when shelters are open and providing assistance.

This application was contributed to the American Red Cross by VisionLink® in Boulder, CO, providing enterprise software (CommunityOS™) for multi-agency client and case management, community resource management and referral, and disaster relief solutions.

Quickly and confidently respond to common emergency situations with these step-by-step video instructions.

**Please note: The American Red Cross is a charitable organization, not a government agency.**

Offering emergency care protocols & guides, by the American Red Cross & Dr. Oz.

The American Red Cross and Dr. Oz have teamed up with Sharecare to create the ultimate emergency care app exclusively for Android mobile devices. The S.O.S. app provides step-by-step video narration by Dr. Oz and follow along demonstrations allowing people to quickly and confidently respond to common emergency situations with the goal of saving lives. This free app also includes an expansive Resource Guide for easy access to additional emergency care information.

Emergency care protocols for over 30 of the most common emergency care situations were developed and reviewed by prestigious medical and educational panels from both the American Red Cross and the American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP). These protocols were then adapted for an Android app environment and are accompanied by dynamic videos that walk through clear and concise emergency action steps that are appropriate for any audience. Dr. Oz is the instructional voice of each video, reassuringly guiding users on how to provide emergency care. 3-D animations are included for the more complex techniques, specifically Unconscious Choking and CPR which also include an audio and visual counter for real time CPR compressions.

The Resource Guide covers over 50 common emergency care situations and was adapted from current American Red Cross training materials. It includes information on everything from CPR to seizures to broken bones, all in an easy to understand and browse Q&A format.

In addition to the emergency protocols and resource guide, the SOS app features 911 dialing that auto launches a helpful map with location information which becomes active while on call with emergency dispatch. Additionally, the SOS app provides the same helpful information for 911 calls manually dialed from outside the app. SOS app users can quickly access rich resource materials with voice recognition and keep personal emergency contact info handy at all times.

Assists first responders in hazardous material incidents.

WISER (Wireless Information System for Emergency Responders) is a mobile application designed to assist first responders in hazardous material incidents.

First responders in general, and HAZMAT units in particular, must make many decisions quickly in handling hazardous-materials incidents. They need accurate information about the hazardous substances, the emergency resources available, and the surrounding environmental conditions to save lives and minimize the impact on the environment and physical property. The WISER application extracts content from TOXNET’s Hazardous Substances Data Bank (HSDB), an authoritative, peer-reviewed information resource maintained by the National Library of Medicine, and places that information into the hands of those who need it most.

Features of WISER

* Rapid access to the most important information about a hazardous substance by an intelligent synopsis engine and display called “Key Info”

* Intuitive, simple, logical user interface developed by working with experienced first responders

* Comprehensive decision support, including guidance on immediate actions necessary to save lives and protect the environment

* Access to NLM’s Hazardous Substances Data Bank (HSDB), which contains detailed peer-reviewed information on hazardous substances

* User Profiles enable users to specify the role they are currently playing at the scene of an incident: first responder, HAZMAT specialist, or EMS specialist. The key information presented to the user about a substance varies depending on this role, so that the information most relevant to the respective job can be quickly accessed.

* Radiological and biological substance support.

* Mobile support, providing first responders critical information where they need it, when they need it.

Since its launch on July 23, 1999, the Chandra X-ray Observatory has been NASA’s flagship mission for X-ray astronomy, taking its place in the fleet of “Great Observatories.”

NASA’s Chandra X-ray Observatory is a telescope specially designed to detect X-ray emission from very hot regions of the Universe such as exploded stars, clusters of galaxies, and matter around black holes. Because X-rays are absorbed by Earth’s atmosphere, Chandra must orbit above it, up to an altitude of 139,000 km (86,500 mi) in space. The Smithsonian’s Astrophysical Observatory in Cambridge, MA, hosts the Chandra X-ray Center which operates the satellite, processes the data, and distributes it to scientists around the world for analysis. The center maintains an extensive public website about the science results and an education program.

The National Museum of Natural History (NMNH) is part of the Smithsonian Institution, the world’s preeminent museum and research complex. The Museum is dedicated to inspiring curiosity, discovery, and learning about the natural world through its unparalleled research, collections, exhibitions, and education outreach programs. Opened in 1910, the green-domed museum on the National Mall was among the first Smithsonian building constructed exclusively to house the national collections and research facilities.

Whether looking at the history and cultures of Africa, describing our earliest Mammalian ancestor or primate diversity around the world, examining ancient life forms including the ever popular dinosaurs, or exploring the beauty of rare gemstones such as uniquely colored diamonds, the Museum’s temporary and permanent exhibitions serve to educate, enlighten and entertain millions of visitors each year. The main building on the National Mall contains 1.5 million square feet of space overall and 325,000 square feet of exhibition and public space; altogether the Museum is the size of 18 football fields, and houses over 1000 employees. With a growing network of interactive websites, the Museum is transforming itself into a hub for national and international electronic education, accessible to anyone with access to the internet.

The National Museum of the American Indian has in recent years undertaken an ambitious program of acquiring and exhibiting significant works by Native contemporary artists. Vantage Point presents highlights from this young but growing collection, with pieces by 25 artists working across a range of media from paintings, drawings, and photography to video projection and mixed-media installation. These complex and richly layered works speak to the concerns and experiences of Native people today and are organized around the following four themes: personal memory and identity, history and the contemporary urban experience, landscape and place, and cultural memory and persistence. The artists featured include James Lavadour (Walla Walla), Truman Lowe (Ho-Chunk), Alan Michelson (Mohawk), and Marie Watt (Seneca), Kent Monkman (Cree), and Emmi Whitehorse (Navajo).
